Discussing the XFO Audio DCVx3 Power Supply Unit
Share
I designed the PSU precisely to the optimum specifications of the datasheets of the voltage regulators as well as other "best practices" for PSU's. Additional design and component inspiration come from Doug Self.
The DCVx3 is intended for high-class studio audio devices that need either class-A votages (+24V and ground) plus 48V phantom power or differential (adjustable +/- voltages and ground) plus 48V phantom power.
AC ripple is minimized in this design is by using a .1uf tantalum capacitor rather than a 1uf electrolytic capacitor before the variable voltage regulators. The filter caps were chosen for their long life, quality, heat tolerance etc. If the user have a filter cap preference, they are welcome to use whatever brand, series and value they prefer. Different filter caps will give you different results, and some people have very strong opinions than others on cap manufacturer, series etc. I haven't built strong internal preferences for a particular brand of filter stage caps, but I do appreciate an emphasis on longevity and quality. I prefer to build this power supply with an AC torroidal transformer from Antek Inc. Triad Magnetics are also good.
The DCVx3 is designed to be built out to your custom voltage requirements. When purchasing a PCB only, you will have to wire the AC transformer according to the needs of your application. Class A power supplies require a dual-secondary 24V transfomer wired in parallel, but a differential voltage supply requires a dual-secondary wired in series with the center tap creating ground reference.
The regulator for the 48V phantom supply is the TI783, and is widely employed for this purpose. This third voltage rail is built off a voltage double or tripler (depending on transformer and jumper position).
Please let me know if you have any questions about this or other XFO Audio products. I look forward to helping your custom audio projects come to life!
